ISTC 789 Practicum & Portfolio in School Library Media - Open Educational Resources (OER) training meeting
Artifact Descriptions:
ISTC 615 Collection Development - DOGO News Review. This assignment critiques a recent online news source for young learners. The word 'dogo' means 'young' or 'small' in Swahili. The biweekly publication is published by the same group that publishes DOGObooks, which joins with the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) yearly to select the Teen's top ten.The news source review artifact considers selection criteria including authority, appropriate content, scope, and authenticity.
ISTC 789 Practicum & Portfolio in School Library Media - OER training meeting. This professional development opportunity provided information about Open educational resources with caveats to educators who are collecting free educational resources for learners. School librarians can evaluate the resources with a two-page tool.
Relevance:
The LMS is a valued educator always modeling commitment to the school community by seeking out reviews of resources and by gathering recommendations from colleagues, faculty, and learners. Membership in professional organizations provides information which can improve the library program and keep the library space inviting. The LMS sets goals for professional growth that support roles of information specialist and library administrator to meet the AASL standard 4.2 for Professional development.
The DOGO News Review is one example of the many products that the LMS makes available when evaluating and communicating about resources that keep the collection timely. The LMS uses evaluation tools made available from colleagues, school districts, and the American Association of School Librarians (AASL). This particular resource allows students to read about and listen to current events. It offers a variety of reading and content levels, media formats, and accessibility options to serve learners. And it is free.
The OER training meeting introduced teachers and school librarians to free educational resources which offer valid information and/or free graphics for student or teacher researchers. Educators were invited to evaluate sites and to curate the best of them. Information about how to make the resources more accessible to all readers was also provided. This meeting allowed school librarians to share their experience with their colleagues and with invited teachers in order to best gather materials for instruction. Using new materials and evaluating accessibility with new Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) adds to school librarian expertise.
Analysis/Reflection:
The DOGO News Review is one of many examples of materials approved by the school librarian that will invite students to read for information. The LMS uses evaluation tools made available from colleagues, school district librarians, and American Association of School Librarians (AASL). In order to address school progress plans (SPPs), teacher queries, and learners' information needs, it is important for the LMS to learn quickly what is needed in order to provide necessary services. I subscribe to School Library Journal and have a membership in the Maryland Association of School Librarians (MASL Md). Meeting with librarians at the elementary level in February about Collection Development and then more recently on the secondary level this spring helps the LMS candidate to connect with other professionals and to share ideas. In the future I hope to continue that involvement by attending the MASL Maryland meetings and keeping contact with librarians regarding the newest developments in information access, evaluation, and retrieval.
